Where e-waste comes from in Richards Bay

Richards Bay is home to a major coal export terminal, aluminium smelting, mineral sands mining and an industrial development zone. These operations depend on control systems, instrumentation, radios and heavy electrical equipment, which are replaced during upgrades and shutdowns. Office IT at port and plant administration buildings adds a steady flow of computers and printers, and a university campus at nearby KwaDlangezwa adds more. Households in Empangeni and Meerensee produce appliances. Industrial sites are the main clients.
